JV Volleyball Overcomes Obstacles

The JV volleyball team was faced by many challenges, one being their setter Ella Wesolowski, out on with an injury at their scrimmage against Lord Botetourt on August 20. Botetourt was able to take an early lead, opening the match with first serve. At first the Bees were struggling to get the ball over the net, but once they regained confidence they were able to quickly catch up to Botetourt. However, Botetourt was still able to pull ahead and the result of set one was 26-24 with Botetourt winning. The second set was a completely different story, the Bees were able to come together and gain an early lead and eventually win over Botetourt.

The last two sets, on the other hand, Botetourt was able to win over Brookville and take the match. ”If we as a team were able to hold onto leads we would have been more successful,” said freshman Ashlyn Winfield. Sophomore Kayleigh Morris, said “We had trouble staying positive when we didn’t have the lead and using their weak spots against them.” There were many points when the Bees spirits were down, but once Morris got the first kill morale was greatly improved.

Both agreed that the team suffered greatly from the loss of Wesolowski, “she plays such an important role on and off the court,” said Morris. “They could run many offensive plays smoothly,” said Winfield when asked what gave Botetourt an advantage during the match. Though the outcome wasn’t ideal, both players said they are proud of how well their team played overall.
